TL;DR
Lead Mechanical Engineer (Space Hardware): Designing and qualifying structural and thermal-mechanical systems for space-based compute and power electronics with an accent on electronics packaging, thermal management, and flight hardware reliability. Focus on owning mechanical architecture, leading environmental qualification, and solving complex integration challenges for hardware operating in Low Earth Orbit.

Location: On-site in San Carlos, California, United States. ITAR requirements apply: applicants must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, protected individual, or eligible to obtain the required U.S. authorizations.

Salary: $150,000–$225,000 annually, plus equity.

What you will do

  • Own the mechanical architecture of space-based compute hardware, including chassis, PCB retention, connector interfaces, and thermal management.
  • Lead packaging, mass, and thermal trade studies for compute and power electronics.
  • Lead and mentor mechanical engineers while setting technical direction, review standards, and execution pace.
  • Define mechanical interfaces, technical budgets, drawings, GD&T specifications, and interface control documents.
  • Drive structural and thermal analysis, mechanical integration, and environmental qualification testing covering vibration, shock, and thermal-vacuum conditions.
  • Collaborate with electrical, thermal, and spacecraft systems teams and represent mechanical engineering in design reviews.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of mechanical engineering experience with flight hardware in aerospace, defense, or high-reliability electronics programs.
  • Technical leadership experience designing electronics enclosures or compute hardware for space or other high-reliability applications.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD tools such as NX or SolidWorks and engineering drawings/GD&T.
  • Experience with structural analysis, thermal modeling, and environmental qualification of flight hardware.
  • Experience managing direct reports or leading a technical team.

Nice to have

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering and 8+ years of flight hardware experience.
  • Experience with conduction-cooled electronics packaging, cold plates, liquid cooling, or high-power compute/GPU packaging.
  • Experience with radiation design considerations, deployable power or thermal structures, and cleanroom hardware integration.
  • Previous experience as a technical lead or engineering manager on a flight program.
