TL;DR
Computational Engineer (Fusion): Developing code-defined stellarator geometries and automated engineering analysis pipelines for commercial fusion power plant components with an accent on parametric design, differentiable models, and multidisciplinary systems engineering. Focus on building JAX-based geometric and physics models, gradient-based optimization, cloud-based CAD-to-simulation workflows, and algorithms for custom 3D geometries.

Location: Munich, Germany; on-site

Company

Develops next-generation stellarator fusion machines and the hardware and infrastructure required for a commercial fusion power plant.

What you will do

  • Architect integrated systems and evaluate trade-offs across plasma physics, magnets, cryogenics, manufacturing, controls, and related subsystems.
  • Create parametric code-based representations of reactor components, including plasma-facing walls and superconducting cables.
  • Automate the engineering workflow from parametric descriptions through CAD, meshing, simulation, and cloud-based post-processing.
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers and simulation specialists on components such as high-temperature superconducting magnets.
  • Build JAX-based differentiable geometric and physics models for gradient-based optimization of coil clearances, structural loads, and manufacturing constraints.
  • Develop algorithms for custom 3D geometries, including signed distance functions, kd-tree spatial queries, and adaptive sampling.

Requirements

  • Early-career engineering profile with the ability to solve difficult technical problems and use code to develop solutions.
  • Ability to reason from first principles and make progress on ambiguous or poorly defined problems.
  • Strong fundamentals in linear algebra and geometry.
  • Experience using Python for engineering or scientific problems.
  • Comfort with Git and well-tested, well-typed, maintainable code.
  • Relevant experience through internships, student engineering teams, open-source work, or substantial independent projects.

Culture & Benefits

  • Work on complex engineering challenges aimed at developing safe, clean fusion energy.
  • Collaborate with a growing international team across Munich, Zurich, and Oxford.
  • Work in a fast-moving environment combining advanced simulation, systems thinking, and practical hardware execution.
  • Contribute to a high-performing and diverse team focused on challenging assumptions and building together.

Hiring process

  • Recruiter interview lasting 30–60 minutes.
  • 30-minute technical screening followed by a case study and review.
  • Technical panel consisting of two 60-minute interviews.
