Mechanical Systems Design Engineer (Nuclear)

Location: Rockville, MD; primary work location at 9801 Washingtonian Boulevard, Gaithersburg, Maryland. Work site expectation: 4 days in the office. Standard schedule is 8:00am–5:00pm ET, Monday–Friday. Travel up to 10% as needed.

Salary: $115,000–$140,000 for Level III, $140,000–$170,000 for Level IV, and $170,000–$200,000 for Level V per year.

What you will do

• Develop mechanical concepts, systems, structures, and components for nuclear products and facilities, with a focus on nuclear safety.
• Define design requirements, interfaces, design bases, criteria, codes, and standards in coordination with systems engineers, project leads, partners, and suppliers.
• Perform structural, thermal, hydraulic, and other engineering calculations to verify that components meet their intended functions and technical requirements.
• Design reactor components including pressure vessels, piping, reactor internals, nuclear fuel systems, and high-temperature graphite components.
• Create and maintain CAD engineering models, assess manufacturability and assembly integration, and support prototyping, testing, commissioning, and production.
• Prepare design documentation, verification and validation plans, technical reports, calculations, drawings, and independent engineering reviews.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering discipline from an accredited institution.
• At least 1 year of hands-on experience developing and delivering hardware or manufacturing processes in a production environment; engineering projects, internships, and relevant collegiate design teams may qualify.
• Experience designing and developing mechanical or fluid systems, assemblies, or components.
• Proficiency with engineering hand calculations, CAD, and product lifecycle management software.
• Experience with hardware ownership, including manufacturing and testing oversight.
• Level III typically requires 5 years of engineering experience, Level IV 10 years, and Level V 15 years; advanced degrees may substitute for part of the experience requirement.

Nice to have

• Commercial nuclear power experience, including design, qualification, licensing, or construction to ASME BPVC Section III or VIII.
• Experience with NRC regulations, ASME B31.1 or B31.3, pressure vessels, piping, valves, heat exchangers, boilers, steam generators, pumps, HVAC, or fire suppression systems.
• Experience with metrology, fit checks, instrumentation, vibration, shock, modal testing, graphite components, tooling, or manufacturing sequencing.
• Experience working in hazardous industrial or manufacturing environments.
