TL;DR
Ground Systems Engineering Intern (Aerospace): Designing, building, testing, and commissioning launch-site structures, mechanisms, and ground support equipment with an accent on CAD modelling, engineering analysis, and mechanical system schematics. Focus on developing test plans and equipment, analyzing post-flight data, and supporting installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and operation of launch pad systems.

What you will do

  • Design structures, mechanisms, launch vehicle transporters, erectors, launchers, spacecraft handling equipment, and ground support tooling under supervision.
  • Create 2D and 3D CAD models, perform engineering calculations and numerical analysis, and maintain mechanical schematics and bills of materials.
  • Develop and execute test plans for launch pad systems and vehicle interfaces, including test equipment design and maintenance.
  • Analyze post-flight and post-test data and collaborate with test and operations teams to keep systems operational.
  • Support suppliers, technicians, installation, commissioning, testing, certification, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Contribute to project planning and work hands-on during system build phases.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Strong 3D CAD skills using SolidWorks, SolidEdge, or similar software.
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations and analysis.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Willingness to take a hands-on approach during project build phases.
  • For New Zealand roles, background and nationality checks apply because access to ITAR-regulated equipment and data is required; eligibility may depend on citizenship or nationality.

Nice to have

  • Experience with hydraulic or pneumatic systems, P&IDs, and system schematics.
  • Experience designing and developing test equipment.
  • Knowledge of structural analysis and mechanical design principles.
  • Previous mechanical engineering or aerospace internship or project experience.
  • Hands-on fabrication or prototyping experience.
