TL;DR
Mechanical Design Engineer (Nuclear): Developing mechanical systems, structures, and components for the Xe-100 advanced nuclear reactor with an accent on nuclear safety, CAD modeling, analysis, prototyping, testing, and manufacturing integration. Focus on designing reactor internals, pressure vessels, piping, graphite components, and cooling systems, performing structural, thermal, and hydraulic calculations, and validating engineering tools.

Location: Gaithersburg, Maryland, United States; 4–5 days in office. Standard schedule is 8:00am–5:00pm ET, Monday–Friday. Travel up to 10% as needed.

Salary: $95,000–$120,000 for Level II, $115,000–$140,000 for Level III, and $140,000–$170,000 for Level IV per year.

What you will do

  • Develop mechanical concepts and designs for reactor systems, structures, and components with a focus on nuclear safety.
  • Define requirements, interfaces, design bases, criteria, applicable codes, and standards with systems engineers and project stakeholders.
  • Perform structural, thermal, hydraulic, and other engineering calculations to verify that components meet their intended functions and technical requirements.
  • Develop solutions for pressure vessels, piping, reactor internals, nuclear fuel, graphite components, cooling systems, and other high-temperature systems.
  • Create and maintain CAD models, support manufacturability and assembly assessments, and coordinate design activities with engineering teams, partners, and suppliers.
  • Prepare design basis documents, technical reports, calculations, drawings, V&V plans, and engineering reviews in accordance with quality and configuration-management procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Proficiency with engineering hand calculations and experience designing mechanical or fluid systems, assemblies, or components.
  • At least one year of hands-on experience developing and delivering hardware or manufacturing processes in a production environment.
  • Experience with hardware ownership, including manufacturing and testing oversight.
  • Experience using CAD and PLM software such as UG/NX, SolidWorks, Pro/Engineer, Teamcenter, Windchill, or similar tools.
  • Level II typically requires three years of engineering experience; Level III five years; Level IV ten years. A relevant master’s or Ph.D. may substitute for part of the experience requirement.

Nice to have

  • Experience with commercial nuclear power plant operations and nuclear power design, qualification, licensing, or construction.
  • Knowledge of ASME BPVC Sections III or VIII, ASME B31.1 or B31.3, NRC regulations, licensing requirements, and other industry standards.
  • Experience selecting, sizing, and specifying piping, ducting, HVAC, fire suppression, pumps, pressure vessels, valves, and structural supports.
  • Hands-on experience with graphite or other non-metallic components, fabrication and assembly sequencing, tooling, or manufacturing oversight of pressure vessels and large metallic components.
