Firmware Engineer (Aerospace)

Location: On-site in San Carlos, California, United States

Salary: $130,000–$185,000 annually

Building satellite infrastructure for the orbital economy, including on-orbit computing, infrared energy transmission, and secure high-bandwidth optical data systems.

What you will do

• Own firmware development for spacecraft subsystems from concept through on-orbit operations.
• Design, develop, and debug embedded firmware for microcontrollers, FPGAs, and custom hardware platforms.
• Implement low-level drivers, SPI, I2C, UART, and CAN communication protocols, plus real-time control systems.
• Develop firmware for power management, avionics interfaces, sensors, and actuator control.
• Support board bring-up, hardware integration, and hardware-in-the-loop testing.
• Investigate anomalies, perform root cause analysis, and contribute to FDIR and fault-tolerant system design.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
• 3+ years of firmware or embedded software development experience.
• Strong C/C++ programming skills for embedded systems.
• Experience with microcontrollers and/or FPGAs.
• Familiarity with real-time systems and embedded debugging tools such as JTAG, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers.
• Applicants must be U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, protected individuals, or eligible to obtain the authorizations required under ITAR.

Nice to have

• Experience in aerospace, automotive, robotics, or other high-reliability systems.
• RTOS experience, including FreeRTOS or VxWorks, and knowledge of real-time scheduling.
• Experience with embedded communication stacks, HIL testing, system validation, Python scripting, Rust, or RTL.
• Knowledge of fault-tolerant design, redundancy, radiation-tolerant design, and high-reliability architectures.
