TL;DR
Senior Manufacturing Engineer (Nuclear): Translating complex nuclear component designs into manufacturable products for small modular reactors with an accent on design for manufacturability, process optimization, vendor oversight, and quality assurance. Focus on developing reactor component designs, performing structural and thermal calculations, supporting fabrication surveillance, and solving real-time manufacturing challenges.

Location: Rockville, Maryland / Gaithersburg, Maryland; four days per week in the office. Travel within the United States and internationally is expected 25%–50%. Working hours are Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.

Salary: $115,000–$140,000 for Level III, $140,000–$170,000 for Level IV, or $170,000–$200,000 for Level V per year.

What you will do

  • Translate complex nuclear component designs into manufacturable products for small modular reactor systems.
  • Develop mechanical concepts, processes, CAD models, drawings, design basis documents, technical reports, and calculations for nuclear structures, systems, and components.
  • Perform structural, thermal, hydraulic, sizing, and other engineering analyses to verify technical requirements and intended functions.
  • Coordinate design activities across engineering teams, partners, suppliers, and vendors throughout the manufacturing lifecycle.
  • Provide fabrication surveillance, on-site vendor monitoring, manufacturing oversight, and real-time technical problem-solving.
  • Develop verification and validation plans, perform independent reviews, and support quality and configuration management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Typically five or more years of engineering experience for Level III, ten or more years for Level IV, or fifteen or more years for Level V.
  • Proficiency with engineering hand calculations and experience designing mechanical or fluid systems, assemblies, or components.
  • At least one year of hands-on experience developing and delivering hardware or manufacturing processes in a production environment.
  • Experience with CAD and PLM software such as NX, SolidWorks, Pro-Engineer, Teamcenter, or Windchill.
  • Ability to work four days per week in the office and travel domestically and internationally 25%–50%.

Nice to have

  • Design for Manufacturing experience and heavy-manufacturer startup or follow-up for first-of-a-kind components.
  • Weld engineering experience and familiarity with AWS standards and ASME BPVC Section IX.
  • Machining, assembly, ASME component manufacturing, and ASME BPVC Section III or Section VIII experience.
  • NX modeling and drawing production experience.
  • Experience troubleshooting manufacturing issues and providing technical solutions during production.
