TL;DR
Mechanical Engineer, Graphite (Nuclear): Designing and developing mechanical systems, structures, and components for the Xe-100 advanced reactor with an accent on graphite core components, nuclear safety, and high-temperature materials. Focus on performing structural, thermal, and hydraulic analyses, creating CAD models, and supporting prototyping, testing, manufacturing, and verification.

Location: Gaithersburg, Maryland, with 4 days in office; standard schedule is 8:00am–5:00pm ET, Monday–Friday. Travel is up to 10% as needed.

Salary: $95,000–$120,000 for Level II, $115,000–$140,000 for Level III, and $140,000–$170,000 for Level IV.

What you will do

  • Develop mechanical concepts, systems, structures, and components for nuclear products and facilities, including graphite core components, reactor internals, pressure vessels, piping, and high-temperature materials.
  • Define design requirements, interfaces, design bases, criteria, and applicable industry codes and standards with systems engineers, project leads, partners, and suppliers.
  • Perform structural, thermal, hydraulic, and other engineering calculations to verify that components meet functional and technical requirements.
  • Create and maintain CAD models and engineering documentation, including design basis documents, technical reports, calculations, and drawings.
  • Support prototyping, testing, manufacturing, assembly, integration, commissioning, and hardware qualification.
  • Develop verification and validation plans, perform independent reviews, and follow quality and configuration-management procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Proficiency with engineering hand calculations and experience designing mechanical or fluid systems, assemblies, or components.
  • At least one year of hands-on experience developing and delivering hardware or manufacturing processes in a production environment, including relevant internships, hobbies, or collegiate engineering projects.
  • Hardware ownership experience, including manufacturing and testing oversight.
  • Experience with CAD and product lifecycle management software such as NX, SolidWorks, Pro/Engineer, Teamcenter, or Windchill.
  • Level II typically requires 3 years of engineering experience; Level III requires 5 years; Level IV requires 10 years.

Nice to have

  • Graphite design, modeling, or analysis experience.
  • Commercial nuclear power experience, including design, qualification, licensing, and construction to ASME BPVC Section III, Division V.
