TL;DR
LTVS Human Factors Engineer (Aerospace): Designing and evaluating human-centered interfaces, controls, lighting, and operational concepts for Astrolab’s FLEX-LTV lunar rover with an accent on astronaut safety, usability, and crew performance. Focus on human factors analyses, human-in-the-loop testing, rapid GUI prototyping, verification of human systems requirements, and coordination with NASA and multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Location: Hawthorne, California; onsite

Salary: $100,000–$169,000 per year

What you will do

  • Execute the Human Systems Integration Plan across the FLEX-LTV development lifecycle to support astronaut safety, performance, and usability.
  • Collaborate with Axiom Space, systems engineers, subsystem engineers, UI designers, operators, and astronauts to align vehicle design with suited crew capabilities and limitations.
  • Optimize displays, controls, mechanical interfaces, and crew task lighting for lunar missions.
  • Create interactive GUI wireframes and mockups in Figma and other rapid prototyping tools in alignment with Artemis GUI standards.
  • Conduct task analyses, human error analyses, human-in-the-loop testing, operational-load assessments, and risk assessments.
  • Support simulations, training events, verification and validation activities, NASA reviews, human systems requirements closure, and technical documentation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Factors, Human-Computer Interaction, Human-Centered Design, Ergonomics, Biomechanics, Psychology, Industrial Design, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of experience in human factors engineering, human systems integration, or UI/UX development, including user research and usability testing.
  • Knowledge of human factors standards such as NASA-STD-3001, MIL-STD-1472, FAA HF-STD-001, or similar standards.
  • Knowledge of systems engineering or project management processes, tools, and methodologies.
  • Ability to work onsite in Hawthorne, California.

Nice to have

  • Graduate degree in a relevant human factors, HCI, design, ergonomics, biomechanics, psychology, or industrial design field.
  • Experience in human spaceflight or another regulated or safety-critical industry.
  • Experience with space architecture, bioastronautics, aerospace physiology, optical engineering, vehicle interiors, or extreme-environment analogs.
  • Knowledge of EVA systems, pressurized suits, or EVA tools.
  • Knowledge of design thinking, rapid prototyping, or iterative product development.
