Software Engineer, AI Platform

Location: Remote in the San Francisco Bay Area / United States. The role involves access to export-controlled information and requires U.S. person status, eligibility for access without export authorization, or eligibility and reasonable likelihood of obtaining export authorization.

What you will do

• Design, ship, and operate internal AI products and platform services, including chat and agent interfaces, retrieval systems, developer workflows, and sandboxed execution environments.
• Build an internal AI chat and agent platform integrated with Vertex AI, GitLab repositories, internal documentation, RAG, MCP servers, code execution, SSO, and access policies.
• Embed AI-native software engineering workflows into GitLab through agents that generate merge requests, respond to review comments, and iterate through the existing review interface.
• Develop isolated, policy-enforced sandboxes for agents and engineers, including safe access to repositories, tools, infrastructure, and laboratory hardware.
• Own the AI gateway layer, including model routing, credential management, access policies, request telemetry, usage analytics, and cost attribution.
• Operate and continuously improve the AI stack through monitoring, upgrades, incident response, security collaboration, and compliance documentation.

Requirements

• Several years of experience building, shipping, and operating production software, with fluency in Python, Go, or TypeScript and Terraform.
• Hands-on experience with LLM-powered systems, including retrieval pipelines, tool use or MCP, agent orchestration, prompt and context management, and evaluation.
• Experience integrating developer platforms through Git-hosting APIs, webhooks, and CI/CD.
• Cloud and Kubernetes engineering experience with containers, Helm, Terraform, GKE, and/or IAM.
• Understanding of sandboxing, containers, network policies, least-privilege credentials, and safe execution of model-generated code.
• Ability to design observable and auditable systems within hard security and compliance boundaries, communicate clearly with technical and executive audiences, and work with high autonomy.

Nice to have

• Experience with CMMC, DoD Impact Levels, FedRAMP, NIST 800-171, or similar regulated environments.
• Self-hosted inference, GPU provisioning, open-weight model deployment, or LLM gateway and cost-attribution experience.
• Hardware-in-the-loop, laboratory automation, DLP, GCP Vertex AI/GKE/IAP, Bazel, or observability stack experience.
