TL;DR
Staff Space Electrical Systems Engineer (Aerospace): Architecting power distribution, instrumentation and controls, and hardware-based control systems for terrestrial and space nuclear reactors and testbeds with an accent on safety-critical electrical architecture, harsh-environment electronics, and regulatory compliance. Focus on integrating hardware, firmware, and test infrastructure, analyzing electrical failure modes, and validating redundant control systems against DOE, NRC, IEEE, MIL, and NASA/ESA requirements.

Location: Torrance, California, in the Los Angeles area. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals, lawful permanent residents, refugees, asylees, or eligible to obtain the required U.S. government authorizations under export regulations.

Salary: $150,000–$210,000 per year, plus equity.

Company

hirify.global is a Series C startup developing mass-producible, inherently safe microreactors for terrestrial, underwater, and space applications.

What you will do

  • Own system-level electrical architecture for space nuclear reactors and testbeds.
  • Design and assess power distribution, instrumentation, controls, and electronics for harsh space and nuclear environments.
  • Lead hardware, firmware, and test-infrastructure integration, bring-up, troubleshooting, and R&D testing.
  • Produce and review schematics, wiring documentation, safety inputs, hazard analyses, test procedures, and reports.
  • Coordinate with Licensing and regulators on instrumentation-loop design basis, fail-safe architecture, redundancy, and compliance milestones.
  • Support design reviews, Documented Safety Analysis inputs, hazard analysis, and verification of safety-class and safety-significant equipment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of experience designing and analyzing electrical or instrumentation systems, ideally in nuclear, aerospace, energy, or industrial automation.
  • Familiarity with electrical requirements for regulated environments, wiring codes, control-logic documentation, and safety classification.
  • Experience with advanced control architectures or SCADA in high-reliability environments is valuable.
  • Flexibility to support hardware development milestones, including occasional weekends or extended hours, and willingness to travel for testing or supplier engagement.
  • Must meet U.S. export-control eligibility requirements or be able to obtain the required authorizations.

Nice to have

  • Experience with power electronics or power-conversion systems.
  • Master’s degree or higher in Electrical or Controls Engineering.
  • Experience with electrical systems in space or nuclear radiation environments and testing under vacuum or radiation conditions.
  • Knowledge of MIL, NASA/ESA, IEEE 379, IEEE 497, GDE-987, and DOE-1189 requirements.
  • Prior nuclear or defense-sector experience and strong communication skills for explaining control loops and design rationales to engineers and regulators.

Culture & Benefits

  • Mission focused on advanced nuclear energy, climate solutions, defense, and space exploration.
  • Values systems thinking, end-user focus, unconventional problem solving, nuanced decision-making, and direct stakeholder engagement.
  • Deep work can be performed remotely, while teams prioritize working together in person.
  • Equity is included in the compensation package.
