Staff Backend Engineer (Java)

Location: On-site in New York City at the SoHo office

Salary: $250,000–$300,000 base salary per year, plus equity

What you will do

• Own backend architecture across multiple services and team boundaries from design through implementation.
• Write production code daily and establish standards for quality, reliability, and engineering practices.
• Partner with engineering leads and product managers to scope large initiatives and define delivery outcomes.
• Improve platform scalability, performance, reliability, security, and observability.
• Build instrumentation, data pipelines, and tooling that provide meaningful insights for organizers and the business.
• Mentor engineers, lead technical discussions and reviews, and participate in hiring and technical interviews.

Requirements

• 8+ years of backend engineering experience, including Staff, Principal, or technical leadership experience.
• Experience designing and delivering systems spanning multiple services or teams with clear ownership of outcomes.
• Deep expertise in APIs, data modeling, distributed systems, and event-driven architecture, with strong full-stack knowledge.
• Proficiency with Java, Node, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, AWS, or similar technologies.
• Experience scaling and operating production platforms, responding to incidents, and evolving systems under load.
• Ability to communicate technical tradeoffs clearly and mentor engineers across levels.
