Software Engineer, Backend (Node)

Location: On-site in San Francisco or Cambridge, Massachusetts. Wednesdays are work-from-home.

Salary: $180,000–$300,000 per year plus equity.

What you will do

• Own core product capabilities end to end, from customer requirements and behavioral semantics through data models, APIs, migrations, rollout, and production operation.
• Design shared abstractions for the product UI, public APIs, agents, automations, and internal engineering teams.
• Evolve schema-flexible, graph-shaped data models on Postgres for runtime-defined objects, attributes, relationships, and versioned values.
• Build authorization, history and audit, event propagation, durable execution, and usage-metering systems.
• Optimize Node services, Postgres query paths, APIs, queues, and background jobs for throughput, reliability, observability, and correctness.
• Partner with product engineers, product leadership, and customers to turn ambiguous needs into practical backend architecture.

Requirements

• Strong software engineering fundamentals and substantial experience building backend systems.
• Experience owning significant product-facing systems or ambiguous technical projects from design through production.
• Strong judgment regarding data models, APIs, system boundaries, migrations, and incremental rollout.
• Experience operating systems with demanding reliability, latency, throughput, and correctness requirements.
• Ability to debug across application code, database execution, distributed workflows, and observability data.
• Product orientation, clear communication, practical tradeoff decisions, and the ability to create alignment without formal authority.

Nice to have

• Experience with Node.js or similar high-throughput service environments.
• Postgres performance tuning, query planning, indexing, transaction design, or multi-tenant data modeling.
• Experience with APIs, queues, workflow systems, background jobs, distributed systems, observability, incident response, and production debugging.
• Experience in a high-growth product environment.
