Senior Mechanisms Engineer (Aerospace)

Location: San Carlos, California, United States; on-site. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, protected individual, or eligible to obtain the required U.S. Department of State authorizations under ITAR.

Salary: $152,000–$220,000 annually

What you will do

• Own the full development lifecycle of gimbal mechanisms for laser communications payloads, from concept development through flight qualification.
• Design precision gimbal assemblies incorporating bearings, flexures, motors, encoders, and structural members.
• Perform kinematics, stiffness, backlash, torque margin, thermal expansion, and bearing life analyses.
• Define performance requirements and interface specifications with optical, laser, controls, and systems engineers.
• Specify and procure precision components, manage suppliers, and conduct acceptance testing.
• Lead flight hardware integration, verification, characterization, and qualification testing.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
• 5+ years of experience designing and developing precision flight mechanisms for aerospace or defense programs.
• End-to-end technical ownership of mechanism design, analysis, procurement, integration, and testing.
• Proficiency with 3D CAD tools such as NX or SolidWorks and engineering drawings with GD&T.
• Hands-on experience integrating, aligning, and functionally testing flight mechanisms in a laboratory environment.
• Experience qualifying flight mechanisms through vibration, shock, and thermal-vacuum testing.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
• 8+ years of precision flight mechanism development experience.
• Experience with gimbals for laser communications, optical payloads, antenna pointing, or fast steering mirrors.
• Experience with space lubrication strategies, life and wear testing, reliability analysis, or closed-loop gimbal control.
• Experience building and qualifying flight hardware in a cleanroom.
