Radiation Shielding Engineer

Location: On-site in Los Angeles, CA, with locations listed in Los Angeles and Idaho Falls

Salary: $150,000–$240,000 per year, plus equity

What you will do

• Own radiation shielding design and analysis for reactor operation, shutdown, transportation, storage, and disposition.
• Characterize radiation sources from fission, activation, and decay using modern analysis tools.
• Develop material-selection trade studies and optimize shielding configurations for different deployment scenarios.
• Develop neutronics simulations for operating and post-operation reactor configurations.
• Support regulatory compliance strategies and licensing pathways.
• Maintain analysis tools and ensure analyses comply with the hirify.global quality assurance program.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in nuclear or mechanical engineering, physics, materials science, or a related field.
• 4+ years of experience in radiation shielding analysis and design.
• Proficiency with radiation shielding tools such as MCNP/ADVANTG, SCALE/MAVRIC, or similar Monte Carlo variance-reduction tools.
• Ability to navigate regulatory requirements, shielding design features, analysis tools, and manufacturing methods.
• Ability to work long hours and weekends when necessary to support critical milestones, and to travel to regulatory locations.
• Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals, lawful permanent residents, refugees, asylees, or eligible to obtain the required U.S. government authorizations under export regulations.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree or PhD in nuclear engineering.
• Working knowledge of Python or another programming language.
• Broad knowledge of nuclear interactions with materials, especially for radiation shielding.
• Strong project management skills and experience communicating technical concepts across multidisciplinary teams.
• Demonstrated high impact on team goals and strong collaborative problem-solving skills.
