Staff Instrumentation and Controls Engineer (Nuclear)

Location: Torrance, California, United States. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States as a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.

Salary: $173,000–$211,000 USD per year.

What you will do

• Design, develop, commission, and maintain PLC, DCS, SCADA, HMI, batch control, and safety instrumented systems for nuclear fuel manufacturing facilities.
• Program Rockwell, Siemens, Emerson, or equivalent control platforms using IEC 61131-3 languages.
• Develop ISA-88 batch sequences, recipes, phase logic, alarm systems, historian infrastructure, dashboards, and enterprise integrations with MES, ERP, and LIMS.
• Commission instrumentation, tune PID and regulatory control loops, configure industrial communication protocols, and support loop calibration.
• Own instrument engineering scope, including field-device sizing, instrument indexes, hook-up drawings, and hazardous-area classification.
• Lead complex projects technically, oversee contractors, troubleshoot control-system faults, and mentor junior engineers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronic, Computer, Systems Engineering, or a related discipline.
• At least 8 years of I&C or controls engineering experience in process industries, including ownership of complex projects from design through commissioning.
• Hands-on PLC programming experience with Rockwell, Siemens, Emerson, or an equivalent platform, plus SCADA development experience.
• Experience with ISA-88 batch control, ISA-95 enterprise-control integration, instrumentation commissioning, and regulatory loop tuning.
• Working knowledge of OPC-UA, EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, or Modbus, and the ability to interpret P&IDs, electrical drawings, and instrument data sheets.
• Experience specifying and sizing field instruments and leading hazardous-area classification and instrument-index development for capital projects.

Nice to have

• Ignition, Rockwell, Siemens, ISA CAP, or equivalent certifications.
• Experience with SIS/SIL verification, IEC 61511 lifecycle documentation, PI systems, LIMS integration, or nuclear quality requirements such as NQA-1.
• Experience with SQL, Python scripting, REST APIs, IEC 62443, or secure industrial control-system network architecture.
