Principal Software Engineer (Aerospace)

Location: Long Beach, California, United States; based at the headquarters

Salary: $170,000–$260,000 USD per year base pay for California

What you will do

• Lead the end-to-end software architecture for spacecraft flight and ground systems.
• Develop embedded flight software for RTOS environments such as VxWorks and embedded Linux, including hardware drivers for spacecraft sensors and actuators.
• Architect and deploy web-based ground software platforms for spacecraft operations.
• Develop unit tests within CI and work with hardware-in-the-loop engineers to validate integrated systems.
• Provide technical direction and mentorship while aligning software systems with mission requirements.
• Support mission-critical on-orbit operations and software performance in harsh environments.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, or a related technical discipline.
• 12+ years of professional software development experience, including embedded and ground software.
• Expertise in architecting scalable and reliable software for aerospace or defense applications.
• Proficiency in C, C++, and Python for testing; experience with DIO and AIO, hardware integration, ICDs, and debugging.
• Experience deriving flight software architecture from electrical designs, reading ICD lists or schematics, and working with RF ground-to-space communications.
• U.S. citizenship and an active TS/SCI clearance are required; ITAR eligibility applies.

Nice to have

• Advanced degree in aerospace engineering, computer science, or a related field.
• Experience with CAN/CAN-FD, SpaceWire, UDP/TCP, CCSDS standards, autonomous vehicles, or harsh-environment systems.
• Experience with microservices, distributed systems, FastAPI, Kubernetes, CI/CD, Git workflows, and OAuth.
• Full-stack experience with Golang or Rust, TypeScript, Angular, InfluxDB, PostgreSQL, or equivalent technologies.
• Experience leading teams and planning work and staffing with program management.
