Senior Software Engineer, Core Systems (Ocean Technology)

Location: Remote position; offices, lab, and shop are located in Portland, Oregon. Relocation assistance is available for a move to Portland if needed.

Salary: $175,000–$230,000 per year, plus equity.

What you will do

• Build and maintain network-facing software that enables ocean-based Nodes to communicate reliably with shore.
• Design bandwidth-efficient telemetry pipelines and APIs for command, control, and telemetry exchanges.
• Implement buffering, retry logic, and prioritized retransmission for intermittent or degraded connectivity.
• Collaborate with networking and security engineers to allocate bandwidth, harden services, and address vulnerabilities.
• Optimize onboard software for latency, throughput, and resource efficiency.
• Improve unit testing, integration testing, CI/CD pipelines, code reviews, documentation, and engineering practices.

Requirements

• 7+ years of software development experience, including 3+ years with data-intensive or mission-critical systems.
• Proficiency in Rust, C++, or a similar systems programming language.
• Experience building or maintaining production network-facing software and understanding L2–L4 networking, transport protocols, congestion control, and distributed systems.
• Experience designing systems for constrained, high-latency, intermittent, or expensive links.
• Familiarity with authentication, authorization, encryption, and key management for networked systems.
• Experience with Git and CI/CD pipelines, plus strong cross-disciplinary communication skills.

Nice to have

• Rust experience building reliable, high-performance software systems.
• Experience with real-time or safety-adjacent systems.
• Background in robotics, aerospace, or marine systems involving data processing.
• Familiarity with time-series databases, streaming analytics, telemetry monitoring, or containerized build environments.
