Senior Software Engineer (Backend)

Location: Boston office in Charlestown, MA; minimum 3 days per week in the office, with additional days as needed based on project demands

Salary: $176,000–$183,500 annually in Boston, with geographic-specific salary structures.

What you will do

• Design and implement backend systems that manage complex state across distributed systems, robotic communication, order fulfillment, and human-machine interaction.
• Build infrastructure spanning cloud and on-premise resources, including event-driven architectures, PostgreSQL databases, WebSocket protocols, and containerized applications.
• Develop and deploy high-quality software while maintaining reliability, testing, release processes, and production performance monitoring.
• Plan and deliver product features end to end by evaluating tradeoffs, defining implementation tasks, and collaborating with product, design, and operations partners.
• Improve engineering processes, automate repetitive work, document technical decisions, and mentor other engineers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience building and shipping highly concurrent, distributed systems to production.
• Strong proficiency in Elixir, OTP, and the Phoenix framework.
• Proficiency with PostgreSQL and relational database design.
• Experience with WebSocket events, REST APIs, webhooks, message-based systems, and Infrastructure as Code using Terraform.
• Strong system design, troubleshooting, communication, and technical collaboration skills.
