TL;DR
Senior Structural Engineer (FEA/ocean technology): Developing automated structural-sizing algorithms, analysis pipelines, and cost-estimation tools for renewable ocean technology designed to operate in severe marine conditions with an accent on first-principles engineering, FEA, stress analysis, and fatigue assessment. Focus on evaluating millions of design variations, analyzing complex mechanical systems, and driving structural verification, design reviews, and manufacturable hardware solutions.

Location: Portland, Oregon. Candidates are strongly preferred to relocate to Portland; at minimum, the role requires intermittent travel to Portland, vendors, and test sites.

Salary: $150,000–$250,000 per year, plus company equity.

Company

hirify.global is a public benefit renewable energy and ocean technology company developing technologies that capture ultra-low-cost ocean energy for computing and renewable fuels.

What you will do

  • Develop algorithms and software for automated structural sizing and evaluation across millions of design points.
  • Work with Nastran input and output files, FEA scripts, and internal structural analysis tools.
  • Generate load spectra and perform stress hand calculations, fatigue analysis, and damage-tolerance assessments.
  • Serve as the stress analyst for mechanical subsystems including primary structures, electronics packaging, drivetrains, deployment features, piping, cable routing, and test equipment.
  • Drive structural design, verification, manufacturing readiness, and evaluation of linear, nonlinear, and dynamic behavior in large assemblies.
  • Lead design reviews and coordinate with internal teams, external fabricators, vendors, and test sites.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent qualification.
  • Advanced knowledge of classical structural analysis and computer-based structural analysis methods.
  • Experience evaluating parts and assemblies that have undergone structural testing and entered service.
  • Working knowledge of FEA codes and pre- and post-processing, with Nastran preferred.
  • Solid coding ability in Python, Julia, Mathematica, or a similar language for data review and analysis.
  • At least five design, build, test, and deploy cycles, together with strong communication, teamwork, and independent project ownership skills.

Nice to have

  • Advanced degree or five additional years of relevant experience.
  • At least five years in a similar role and experience with large welded steel structures in dynamic environments.
  • Experience with Femap, NX, Teamcenter, Nastran input decks, structural verification testing, and hands-on hardware development.
  • Experience in design, fabrication, assembly, and testing, plus strong technical presentation and organizational skills.

Culture & Benefits

  • Creative, scrappy, collaborative environment organized around technical merit and first-principles problem solving.
  • Flexible working hours, substantial autonomy, work-life balance, and unlimited paid time off.
  • Health, dental, vision, disability, 401(k), health FSA, and dependent-care FSA benefits.
  • Health, dental, and vision coverage is fully paid for eligible full-time employees and their partners and dependents under the stated plans.
  • Relocation assistance is available for moving to Portland.
  • Occasional longer hours and weekends may be required for critical needs.
