TL;DR
Hardware Support Engineer II (Robotics): Building, integrating, validating, and deploying robotic prototypes and electro-mechanical systems with an accent on hardware quality, diagnostics, and operational readiness. Focus on root cause analysis, test fixture development, teleoperation rig maintenance, and resolving complex mechanical and electrical integration issues onsite.

Location: Redwood City, California; onsite five days per week with occasional travel to client locations

What you will do

  • Fabricate, assemble, integrate, inspect, and validate robotic prototypes, mechanical assemblies, electrical systems, wire harnesses, and electro-mechanical subsystems.
  • Maintain hardware quality standards, perform functional validation, investigate mechanical and electrical failures, and drive corrective actions.
  • Develop test plans, assembly jigs, test fixtures, and validation systems to improve reliability and reduce defects.
  • Set up, calibrate, validate, and maintain teleoperation rigs for data collection in the lab and at client sites.
  • Lead technical work during client deployments, ensuring operational readiness and resolving hardware issues.
  • Create SOPs, quality checklists, training materials, serviceability documentation, and hardware performance metrics.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience as an engineering technician, hardware technician, or similar role in robotics, automotive, medical devices, R&D, or manufacturing.
  • Experience assembling and troubleshooting complex electro-mechanical systems, including high- and low-voltage systems and wire harnesses.
  • Hands-on experience with hand and power tools, soldering and rework, DMMs, oscilloscopes, power supplies, actuators, and electro-mechanical devices.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical, electrical, system-level, and basic software issues and perform structured root cause analysis.
  • Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and 3D CAD models; working knowledge of Linux, command-line tools, Python, and networking debugging.
  • Ability to work onsite in Redwood City five days per week and travel occasionally to client locations.

Nice to have

  • Experience with robotic systems, automation platforms, or autonomous hardware.
  • Experience with structured quality systems, ISO-based processes, or formal validation procedures.
  • Proficiency with CAD tools such as Onshape, SolidWorks, or CATIA.
  • Experience with Altium, PCB bring-up, 3D printing, machining, laser cutting, or rapid prototyping.
  • Experience mentoring junior technicians or leading small build efforts in a startup environment.
