TL;DR
Senior Computational Engineer (CFD): Leading high-fidelity CFD validation of optimized marine system designs using Helyx, OpenFOAM, and Star-CCM+ with an accent on hydrodynamic performance, automation, and comparison against experimental and sea-trial data. Focus on diagnosing complex simulation issues, improving HPC workflows, quantifying uncertainty, and connecting predicted performance with measured ocean-system behavior.

Location: Portland, Oregon, with exceptional remote candidates considered; regular travel to Portland is expected. Legal authorization to work in the United States is required. Relocation assistance to Portland is available if needed.

Salary: $155,000–$200,000 per year, plus company equity.

Company

hirify.global is a public benefit renewable energy and ocean technology company developing ultra-low-cost ocean energy technologies for computing and renewable fuels.

What you will do

  • Lead CFD-based performance validation for optimized marine system designs, including geometry preparation, meshing, solver setup, debugging, post-processing, visualization, and reporting.
  • Run and improve workflows using Helyx, OpenFOAM, and/or Star-CCM+ across complex marine operating conditions.
  • Evaluate power, propulsion, hydrodynamic loading, device performance, and other engineering metrics.
  • Compare CFD results with reduced-order models, BEM and time-domain simulations, experimental data, sea-trial measurements, and metocean observations.
  • Develop automation pipelines, reusable simulation templates, dashboards, technical memos, and technical presentations.
  • Collaborate with optimization, controls, mechanical engineering, metocean, fleet simulation, and experimental teams to connect predicted and measured performance.

Requirements

  • Legal authorization to work in the United States.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Ocean Engineering, Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a similar field.
  • Significant experience running end-to-end CFD simulations for real engineering systems and experience with at least one RANS-based CFD tool.
  • Strong knowledge of fluid mechanics, marine hydrodynamics, rigid body dynamics, physics-based modeling, and CFD verification and validation.
  • Experience diagnosing meshing, boundary-condition, convergence, numerical-stability, turbulence-modeling, and post-processing issues.
  • Working knowledge of Linux, scripting workflows, and HPC-based simulation execution, with strong technical communication and project ownership skills.

Nice to have

  • 5+ years of experience in CFD, marine hydrodynamics, naval architecture, offshore engineering, turbomachinery, propulsion, or related fields.
  • Experience with marine CFD, free-surface or multiphase flows, fluid-structure interaction, propulsion, wave-structure interaction, or metocean environments.
  • Multiple CFD tools and solver development experience, especially with Helyx or OpenFOAM.
  • Programming experience with Python, C++, Julia, Java, Bash, or similar engineering languages.
  • Experience with physical test data, metocean datasets, CAD-to-CFD workflows, dashboards, technical mentorship, or startup R&D environments.

Culture & Benefits

  • Work in an idea-meritocracy focused on rapidly deploying sustainable ocean energy technologies.
  • Full-time employees receive equity in the company.
  • Flexible paid time off and health, dental, vision, and disability insurance are provided.
  • Benefits include 401(k), health FSA, and dependent care FSA contributions.
  • Occasional extended hours or weekend work may be required for milestones, sea trials, fleet operations, or urgent design decisions.
