TL;DR
Data and Controls Systems Test Engineer (Aerospace): Designing and operating instrumentation, data acquisition, and automated test control systems for spacecraft propulsion, fluids, mechanical, avionics, and environmental test campaigns with an accent on sensor architecture, test sequencing, and data integrity. Focus on commissioning and calibrating instrumentation, building real-time monitoring and safety interlocks, troubleshooting hardware-software integration, and validating high-quality engineering test data.

Location: Fully onsite in Long Beach, California, United States

U.S. citizenship or qualifying ITAR authorization is required due to government contracts and U.S. space technology export regulations.

Salary: $125,000–$155,000 for Test Engineer 3; $140,000–$175,000 for Senior Test Engineer.

What you will do

  • Design data acquisition systems for propulsion, fluids, mechanical, avionics, and environmental test campaigns.
  • Develop automated test control and sequencing software using LabVIEW, Python, MATLAB, or similar platforms.
  • Define instrumentation requirements and sensor layouts with multidisciplinary test engineering teams.
  • Commission, calibrate, validate, and perform uncertainty analysis for instrumentation and DAQ systems.
  • Build real-time monitoring displays, safety interlocks, and automated abort logic for hazardous test operations.
  • Process, analyze, visualize, and manage test data while integrating spacecraft telemetry and command interfaces into ground systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, computer, aerospace, mechanical engineering, computer science, or a related technical discipline.
  • Relevant experience in data acquisition, test automation, instrumentation, or control systems engineering in aerospace, defense, or high-reliability test environments.
  • Hands-on experience with DAQ hardware such as National Instruments, Keysight, or HBM and platforms including LabVIEW, MATLAB, or Python.
  • Programming experience in Python, LabVIEW, MATLAB, or C/C++, plus knowledge of pressure transducers, thermocouples, load cells, strain gauges, accelerometers, and flow meters.
  • Experience with signal conditioning, analog and digital I/O, measurement uncertainty analysis, and hardware-software troubleshooting.
  • U.S. citizenship or qualifying U.S. work authorization is required.

Nice to have

  • Master’s degree in electrical, computer, or aerospace engineering.
  • Experience with real-time control systems, PLC programming, embedded systems, high-speed or distributed DAQ, and spacecraft avionics interfaces.
  • Knowledge of Modbus TCP, EtherCAT, PROFINET, Git, continuous integration, and test data visualization tools such as Grafana or Tableau.
  • Experience with hazardous test operations, systems engineering, requirements verification, or test planning.
  • Active Secret or Top Secret clearance.
