TL;DR
Mechanical Engineer, Structures (Marine) (Offshore Structures): Designing and deploying Node structures and subsystems for long-duration operation in demanding ocean environments with an accent on structural analysis, manufacturability, and corrosion-conscious design. Focus on performing FEA and fatigue analysis, developing CAD and GD&T documentation, and validating prototypes through testing and at-sea trials.

Location: On-site in Portland, Oregon, United States, with periodic travel to vendors, deployment sites, and test locations.

Salary: $105,000–$145,000 per year, plus company equity.

What you will do

  • Own the design, structural analysis, and development of Node structures, secondary structures, and subassemblies from concept through deployment.
  • Perform structural and dynamic analysis, including FEA, hand calculations, margins, and fatigue analysis.
  • Create and maintain 3D CAD models, detailed drawings, GD&T documentation, and tolerance stack-ups.
  • Lead design trade studies and engineering reviews while documenting technical decisions and findings.
  • Select materials and develop corrosion-conscious details for long-duration seawater service.
  • Plan and support structural validation testing from component tests through prototype and at-sea trials, collaborating with operations, technicians, and manufacturing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Naval Architecture, or a related technical field.
  • 3+ years of experience in mechanical or structural design engineering, including internships, research, or project work.
  • Demonstrated 3D CAD modeling experience and strong structural analysis fundamentals, including load paths, hand calculations, and FEA.
  • Experience or exposure to metallic structural design, GD&T, drawing creation, integration, and testing.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills in a multidisciplinary, fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work on-site in Portland and travel to vendors and test or deployment sites as needed.

Nice to have

  • Master’s degree and 3+ years of professional experience designing and analyzing primary or secondary structures.
  • Proficiency with NX/Teamcenter and NASTRAN/Simcenter.
  • Startup or agile development experience.
  • Marine or offshore engineering knowledge and familiarity with DNV, ABS, AWS D1.1, or BPVC standards.
