Counsel or Senior Counsel (AI/Drug Discovery)

Location: South San Francisco, California, United States; in-person hybrid schedule with three days per week onsite

Salary: $170,000–$217,000 annual starting salary for successful US-based applicants, plus eligibility for an annual performance bonus and equity incentive plan.

What you will do

• Draft, review, and negotiate commercial and operational agreements, including CDAs, MSAs, SOWs, consulting agreements, vendor terms, supplier agreements, and equipment contracts.
• Act as the primary legal contact for business and R&D teams, triaging requests, managing matters through completion, and escalating issues when needed.
• Support lab operations and research teams with MTAs, research services agreements, reagent and instrument purchases, CRO and CDMO agreements, and other CMC and R&D contracts.
• Negotiate cloud, compute, infrastructure, and technology agreements supporting machine learning platforms.
• Build and improve contract templates, playbooks, trainings, approval workflows, and CLM tooling.
• Deploy AI tools for contract review, drafting, legal research, and knowledge management, while advising colleagues on practical legal issues.

Requirements

• 2–7+ years of legal practice experience at a law firm and/or in-house legal department.
• J.D. from an accredited US law school and admission in good standing to at least one state bar, preferably California, or eligibility for California registered in-house counsel status.
• Experience drafting and negotiating commercial and technology agreements at volume with increasing independence.
• Demonstrated use of AI tools for legal practice, including contract review, drafting, research, and workflow automation.
• Applicants must be US-based and able to work in a hybrid schedule in South San Francisco.
• Strong business judgment, prioritization, communication, discretion, attention to detail, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Nice to have

• Experience in life sciences or biotech and collaboration with scientists and engineers.
• Familiarity with data use and acquisition agreements, AI/ML legal issues, cloud and compute contracting, and open source licensing.
• Exposure to employment law, immigration matters, CLM platforms, or legal workflow tools.
