TL;DR
Fleet Operations Lead Engineer (Autonomous Ocean Energy Systems): Designing and operating the fleet protocols, control systems, and marine operations for autonomous wave power generators with an accent on safety, fleet optimization, and hardware health monitoring. Focus on coordinating software, node controllers, marine operations, geographic constraints, and maintenance returns across challenging ocean conditions.

Location: Onsite in Portland, Oregon; hybrid arrangements may be discussed. Relocation assistance is available to facilitate a move to Portland.

Salary: $175,000–$280,000 per year, plus equity.

What you will do

  • Own at-sea operations for the autonomous Node fleet from initial deployment through decommissioning.
  • Design fleet operations requirements, protocols, standards, management processes, monitoring, and repositioning strategies.
  • Partner with fleet control software and simulation teams on GUI design, geographic boundaries, fleet movement strategies, and performance optimization.
  • Design and run Node operator qualification standards and training programs.
  • Prevent nodes from entering major shipping lanes or shallow water.
  • Monitor node health and performance trends and coordinate planned or emergent returns to port with engineering and marine operations teams.

Requirements

  • Degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 5+ years of marine operations experience, including planning around ocean conditions, water depth, geography, and weather.
  • Extensive experience learning and operating complex mechanical and electrical vehicle or product systems in challenging, high-consequence environments.
  • Experience integrating operational requirements into hardware and GUI design.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills across varied technical levels.
  • Ability to work onsite in Portland, Oregon, with travel to Portland required.

Nice to have

  • Advanced degree in a relevant engineering field.
  • Proficiency with plotting and analyzing data for performance trends and hardware health.
  • Experience designing complex vehicle operations from the ground up across software, hardware, communications, operators, and performance requirements.
  • Knowledge of marine systems fundamentals, including hydraulics, pneumatics, and industrial automation.
