Design Release Engineer (Automotive)

Location: Troy, Michigan, United States. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis; visa sponsorship is not available.

Salary: $108,877.26–$163,315.90 annual base pay.

What you will do

• Lead the engineering development and release of steering wheel, driver airbag, and passenger airbag systems.
• Develop functional and technical requirements in collaboration with internal engineering functions, the design studio, and Tier 1 suppliers.
• Manage Tier 1 supplier engineers and external resources while driving technical trade-offs and optimized solutions.
• Support design, development, release, and certification using CAE, CAD, BOM, drawing release, and software release tools.
• Create and maintain APQP documentation, DFMEAs, DVP&Rs, validation records, vehicle and component testing, and certification reporting.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or an equivalent degree from an ABET-accredited or equivalent program preferred; a master’s degree is also preferred.
• 8+ years of design release engineering experience in airbags and/or steering wheels.
• Experience with vehicle-level safety development processes.
• Direct working experience with NHTSA/FMVSS, NCAP, and IIHS crash requirements.
• Ability to lead teams and Tier 1 suppliers, integrate cross-functional input, and drive technical trade-offs with attention to detail.
• Strong communication, team-building, and relationship-building skills.
