Staff Backend Engineer (Data Platform)

Location: Toronto, Canada; most of the team works in the EST time zone, with some members in PST and Central time zones.

hirify.global is a Series B startup building a SaaS platform for designing, managing, and optimizing sales compensation and processing billions in annual managed commissions.

What you will do

• Design and evolve backend services powering product workflows.
• Lead development of complex features for the Spark-based data platform.
• Architect data models for hierarchical, graph-like, relationship-heavy, and large-scale enterprise datasets.
• Build deterministic, reliable systems and improve scalability, observability, testing, and production reliability.
• Drive architectural decisions balancing extensibility, performance, and operational simplicity while partnering with Product.
• Mentor engineers and raise backend engineering standards through technical guidance and design reviews.

Requirements

• Significant experience designing and building complex backend systems in production.
• Expertise in at least one production-grade backend language, such as Python, Java, Kotlin, Go, or C#.
• Strong foundation in relational schema design, data modelling, and SQL.
• Experience with Spark or other ETL tools and frameworks.
• Experience working with hierarchical, graph-like, or relationship-heavy data structures.
• Ability to reason about architectural risks and improve scalability, reliability, and observability in distributed or data-intensive systems.

Nice to have

• Experience with graph databases or graph-based modelling.
• Experience building SaaS products for mid-market or enterprise customers.
• Experience with rule-driven systems, validation workflows, or approval and governance platforms.
• Familiarity with AWS infrastructure and Kubernetes.
• Exposure to Sales Performance Management, RevOps, Incentive Compensation, or related domains.
