Principal Backend Engineer

Location: Hybrid in Seoul, South Korea. Applicants must have valid authorization to work in South Korea; visa sponsorship is not provided.

What you will do

• Define the long-term technical and product vision for data protection across backup, recovery, replication, policy enforcement, metadata integrity, and failure handling.
• Design and evolve cloud-native distributed systems that protect and recover large volumes of enterprise cloud data.
• Lead complex, high-risk initiatives from problem definition through production delivery.
• Analyze failure modes and recovery paths while establishing standards for correctness, durability, security, and operability.
• Partner with Engineering, Product, Customer Success, Security, Compliance, and executive leadership on roadmaps and technical decisions.
• Mentor Principal Engineers and senior technical leaders while remaining hands-on.

Requirements

• 12+ years of professional software engineering experience with significant ownership of complex production systems.
• Experience leading ambiguous, high-impact technical initiatives from definition through delivery.
• Deep experience with distributed or cloud-native systems, correctness, operability, and cost efficiency.
• Ability to translate business, customer, and operational needs into technical requirements and designs.
• Ability to make and communicate critical technical decisions to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Working knowledge of English and valid authorization to work in South Korea are required.

Nice to have

• Senior technical ownership of a team or platform while remaining hands-on.
• Experience designing systems spanning multiple services or cloud environments.
• Familiarity with AWS, GCP, or Azure.
• Experience in data management, backup and recovery, disaster recovery, or data protection.
• Knowledge of authorization, encryption, and secure handling of sensitive data.
