Senior/Staff/Principal Backend Engineer (Platform & Data Ingestion)

Location: Hybrid; applicants must live within 50 miles of the San Francisco, CA or New York City, NY offices. In-office attendance is 3 days per week for candidates within 0–30 miles and 1 day per week for candidates within 30–50 miles. Remaining days may be worked from home. In-person interviews are required.

Salary: $150,000–$236,000 USD annually, with a possible geographic premium.

What you will do

• Build and optimize resilient, high-volume clinical data ingestion and ETL pipelines.
• Own OpenSearch indexing, querying, and performance tuning for oncology data discovery.
• Implement OCR and document-processing workflows that convert unstructured patient timelines into structured data.
• Expand oncology data models through microservices and automated medical quality checks.
• Design high-performance RESTful APIs and distributed backend components using cloud and streaming infrastructure.
• Lead data-quality investigations, participate in code and design reviews, make technical decisions, and mentor peer engineers.

Requirements

• 4+ years of experience building scalable APIs, microservices, and high-volume ETL or ingestion systems.
• Professional experience with Scala, Elixir, or other typed languages such as Java, C#, or C++.
• Experience with OpenSearch or Elasticsearch, complex indexing, and exposure to OCR, document parsing, or natural language text processing.
• Strong data modeling, SQL, and query optimization skills across transactional and analytical data systems.
• Understanding of distributed server-side architectures, reactive principles, AWS or GCP, and messaging systems such as SQS, Kafka, or Google Pub/Sub.
• Must be legally authorized to work for any employer in the United States; visa sponsorship and OPT/STEM extension support are unavailable.

Nice to have

• Experience with Scala Typelevel libraries such as Cats, Shapeless, Circe, or Doobie.
• Experience with TypeScript, Angular, or React for internal project-management interfaces.
