Chief AI Engineer (Conversational AI)

Location: London or Manchester, United Kingdom; hybrid working with at least two days per week or 40% of working time at an office site. Workplace adjustments may support flexibility in office attendance, location, and working patterns.

Salary: £137,848–£189,541 per year.

What you will do

• Lead the Conversational AI technical direction across multiple products and define scalable, reusable architectures for high-volume customer engagement.
• Design AI capabilities spanning front-end customer experiences, AI services, and back-end system integrations.
• Guide architecture decisions, review solution designs, and influence implementation approaches across multiple teams.
• Build and develop a high-performing team of AI Engineers across engineering, data science, and architecture.
• Lead reusable AI capabilities and platforms that can be leveraged across the Group.
• Conduct applied research, experimentation, and prototyping to evaluate emerging technologies and identify high-potential use cases.

Requirements

• Recognised expertise in GenAI and Agentic AI, including creating novel solutions to real-world problems and successfully delivering AI systems to production.
• Strong experience with NLP technologies including generative AI, AI agents, chatbots, language models, transformers, vector stores, and search algorithms.
• Experience building and extending full conversational AI architecture from front-end experience through AI services to back-end system integrations.
• Experience understanding and applying ethical AI standards.
• Ability to communicate technical concepts simply to senior leaders and partner teams.
• Experience working in a regulated environment and managing reliability, security, safety, and explainability risks.
• Line management experience, including coaching technical staff at various levels.
• Strong interest in learning about AI and its real-world applications at scale.
