Embedded Validation & Tools Engineer - OTA

Location: Palo Alto, United States; on-site

Salary: $140,000–$170,000 per year, depending on experience, qualifications, and location.

What you will do

• Design and execute OTA validation plans for OS images, firmware, bootloaders, A/B updates, and delta updates.
• Build and scale automated hardware-in-the-loop, virtualized-device, and emulator test environments for regression, integration, and stress testing.
• Automate OTA pipelines from artifact signing and staging through rollout and post-update verification using Python, shell, and CI tools.
• Validate update resilience under network interruptions, power failures, low battery, storage constraints, corrupted images, and device restarts.
• Measure rollout health through success, rollback, recovery, and update-time metrics; investigate failures and drive remediation with firmware and backend teams.
• Maintain device-lab hardware and improve canary rollouts, rollback thresholds, risk assessments, and operational runbooks.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• 5+ years of hands-on experience validating embedded devices and firmware updates.
• Strong Python and scripting skills, with familiarity with C/C++ for embedded debugging.
• Experience with embedded Linux or RTOS, bootloaders such as U-Boot, partition schemes, and A/B update models.
• Experience building automated test harnesses, integrating tests into CI pipelines, and using serial/UART, JTAG/SWD, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and power-cycling rigs.
• Knowledge of OTA networking protocols and wireless technologies, with strong debugging, root-cause analysis, documentation, and communication skills.

Nice to have

• Experience with cloud OTA platforms, secure updates, code signing, PKI, TPM or secure elements, secure boot, CAN/LIN, or automotive validation.
• Familiarity with Docker, QEMU, staged rollout strategies, Yocto/OpenEmbedded, Buildroot, Prometheus, Grafana, or ELK.
