Senior Scientist, Protein Engineering

Location: On-site in South San Francisco, California, United States

Salary: $150,000–$170,000 annually, plus bonus and equity

What you will do

• Design and execute protein engineering strategies to optimize affinity, specificity, molecular format, and developability.
• Express, purify, and characterize antibodies and therapeutic proteins using chromatographic techniques and biophysical and biochemical assays.
• Coordinate binder discovery campaigns, prioritize screening strategies, interpret results, and advance lead molecules.
• Collaborate with disease biology, therapeutic protein design, screening, pharmacology, computational protein design, and process development teams.
• Manage CROs supporting protein production, assay development, and screening while ensuring data quality and timely delivery.
• Maintain experimental records, prepare technical and regulatory documentation, present scientific data, and mentor junior scientific staff.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in molecular biology, biochemistry, structural biology, or a related scientific discipline.
• 4+ years of industry experience in biotech or biopharma R&D supporting large-molecule therapeutic programs.
• Extensive hands-on protein engineering experience, including structural and functional characterization of antibodies and proteins.
• Deep expertise in antibody formats, production, purification, characterization, developability assessment, and stability studies.
• Proficiency with protein visualization and structural modeling software such as PyMOL and AlphaFold.
• Strong scientific communication, organization, problem-solving, collaboration, and mentoring skills, supported by first-author publications or granted patents.

Nice to have

• Experience with protein–protein interaction assays such as SPR or BLI.
• Experience working with Process Development teams and contributing to IND-enabling documentation.
