TL;DR
Staff Design Quality Engineer - NPI (Quantum Hardware): Building and maturing design quality practices for precision quantum hardware through DFM/DFA reviews, design standards, NPI quality planning, and verification activities with an accent on GD&T, tolerance analysis, and design controls. Focus on leading DFMEA and root-cause investigations, improving prototype and pilot first-pass yield, and coordinating PPAP and first-article inspection at the transition to production.

Location: Onsite in Bothell, Washington, United States; up to 10% domestic travel. Access to export-controlled technology may require U.S. Person status, an export license, or a license exception.

Base salary: $131,962–$172,773 per year, plus bonus, equity, and benefits.

What you will do

  • Lead system-wide Design for Manufacturability and Assembly reviews to identify design quality risks and recurring failure patterns.
  • Drive engineering standards for GD&T, fasteners, component libraries, interfaces, collimators, and CAD configuration.
  • Introduce structured quality planning across NPI build stages, including DFMEA, DVP&R, key characteristics, and measurement plans.
  • Review drawings, CAD models, tolerance stack-ups, design changes, and verification and validation plans.
  • Lead root-cause and corrective/preventive action investigations and verify effectiveness before closure.
  • Support PPAP, AS9102 first-article inspection, design-quality metrics, documentation, and mentoring across engineering.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, systems, manufacturing, or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of quality, design, or reliability engineering experience in a precision hardware environment.
  • Experience facilitating Design FMEAs and leading root-cause and corrective-action investigations through verified closure.
  • Strong GD&T knowledge according to ASME Y14.5, including hands-on tolerance stack-up analysis and engineering drawing and CAD review.
  • Experience with DVP&R and design-controls QMS frameworks such as ISO 9001 Clause 8.3.
  • Strong cross-functional communication skills and experience driving adoption of engineering standards.

Nice to have

  • Experience with opto-mechanical, photonic, vacuum, or cryogenic hardware.
  • APQP/PPAP, AS9102, AS9100, configuration management, or first-article inspection experience.
  • Experience with PLM and change-management tools such as Windchill, Arena, or Teamcenter.
  • ASQ CQE, CRE, or equivalent certification; advanced engineering degree.
