Senior Staff Software Engineer-Backend

Location: Fremont, California, United States. Hybrid role requiring one day per week in the office, regular in-person meetings, events, and occasional travel. The role is not eligible for remote work in New York City.

Salary: $198,000–$242,000 annual base salary in California, plus eligibility for an annual performance bonus. The general base salary range is $180,000–$220,000.

What you will do

• Define and drive long-term technical strategy for digital platforms spanning multiple product domains and engineering organizations.
• Shape platform strategy, technology investments, architectural direction, and scalable engineering standards.
• Lead complex, multi-year technical initiatives and resolve business-critical challenges across products and teams.
• Improve system simplicity, reduce technical debt, and strengthen engineering effectiveness at scale.
• Influence senior stakeholders, executives, vendors, and external technology partners.
• Mentor senior and staff engineers, develop technical leaders, and drive adoption of AI-assisted development practices.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline.
• 12+ years of experience building and scaling complex software platforms.
• Deep expertise in distributed systems architecture, platform engineering, APIs, microservices, cloud-native technologies, and large-scale backend ecosystems.
• Experience defining architecture, engineering standards, reference architectures, and technical governance across multiple teams or organizations.
• Strong ability to influence senior technical and business stakeholders without direct authority.
• Experience aligning technical strategy with business objectives and representing engineering in strategic external engagements.
