Senior Optimization Engineer (Energy)

Location: San Francisco, CA (Hybrid)

Base pay range: $150,000–$210,000 per year

What you will do

• Lead optimization projects from mathematical formulation through production deployment.
• Design linear, mixed-integer, quadratic, stochastic, robust, and multi-stage optimization models for scheduling, dispatch, planning, and operational decision-making.
• Develop models for electricity markets, battery energy storage systems, renewable energy assets, and distributed energy resources.
• Improve solver performance through reformulation, decomposition, warm starts, heuristics, and parameter tuning.
• Build tested, maintainable Python software and contribute to architecture, testing, CI/CD, and deployment of optimization services.
• Collaborate with product, engineering, data science, and commercial stakeholders while mentoring engineers and shaping technical standards.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional experience developing mathematical optimization models in production environments.
• Experience independently leading complex optimization projects from formulation through deployment.
• Professional experience developing production software in Python and deploying optimization models into scalable systems.
• Professional experience in the energy industry is required.
• Master’s degree or higher in Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related quantitative field; a bachelor’s degree with significant relevant experience may be considered.
• Experience with battery energy storage optimization is strongly preferred.

Nice to have

• Experience optimizing battery energy storage systems in wholesale electricity markets.
• Knowledge of ISO/RTO markets, including CAISO, ERCOT, PJM, MISO, NYISO, and ISO-NE.
• Experience with stochastic, robust, or multi-stage optimization and real-time operational decision-support systems.
• Experience mentoring engineers or leading technical projects.
• PhD in Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, Industrial Engineering, or a related quantitative discipline.
