Senior Compliance Engineer, AI Governance (AI)

Location: Hybrid role requiring candidates to be located near Denver, CO; Long Beach, CA; the SF Bay Area, CA; or Washington, DC. Some work must be performed on site.

Base salary: $145,000–$195,000 in Denver; $150,000–$205,000 in Long Beach or Washington, DC; $165,000–$225,000 in the SF Bay Area.

What you will do

• Lead compliance readiness across NIST SP 800-171, NIST SP 800-53, CMMC Level 3, and the NIST Cybersecurity Framework.
• Maintain System Security Plans, POA&Ms, audit evidence repositories, control mappings, and AI/ML system boundaries.
• Serve as the AI compliance subject-matter expert for OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, open-source, and internally developed models.
• Design governance gates for LLM pipelines, including content filtering, prompt-injection defenses, data-classification guardrails, audit logging, and role-based access.
• Assess AI vendors, use cases, model data handling, and API security against AI RMF, NIST controls, CMMC, EAR/ITAR, and internal risk tolerance.
• Partner with engineering, DevSecOps, legal, security, auditors, assessors, and government stakeholders to embed compliance into CI/CD and MLOps workflows.

Requirements

• 7+ years of experience in IT security compliance, GRC, or a related discipline with direct ownership of compliance programs.
• Hands-on expertise with NIST SP 800-171, CMMC Level 2 or 3, NIST SP 800-53, SSPs, POA&Ms, audits, and evidence management.
• Extensive practical experience with AI/LLM platforms and compliance controls such as guardrails, content filtering, logging, and data-classification enforcement.
• Knowledge of AI security risks including prompt injection, jailbreaking, data exfiltration, model inversion, and third-party AI supply-chain risks.
• Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or protected individual under ITAR requirements.
• Active or ability to obtain SECRET or TS/SCI security clearance.

Nice to have

• EAR/ITAR, DFARS, DoD AI Ethics Principles, Responsible AI, or federal AI governance experience.
• Experience with AI DevSecOps, MLOps compliance gates, AI safety tooling, or Azure Government and AWS GovCloud.
• J.D. focused on technology law, export compliance, AI regulation, or cyber law.
• CISA, CRISC, CISSP, CMMC, Security+, or cloud AI/security certifications.
• Experience in aerospace, defense technology, startup, SaaS, or CMMC assessment environments.
