TL;DR
Director Instrumentation, Control, and Electrical – Reactor (HTGR): Owning the instrumentation, control, and electrical architecture for high-temperature gas-cooled reactor plants across design, licensing, procurement, construction, and commissioning with an accent on safety systems, process control, electrical power distribution, and regulatory strategy. Focus on building and leading the IC&E team, defining reactor protection and plant control systems, qualifying instrumentation for high-temperature helium environments, and supporting DOE and NRC licensing.

Location: Torrance, California, United States. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States as U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents.

Salary: $225,000–$300,000 USD annually.

What you will do

  • Own the IC&E design basis for the HTGR, including I&C architecture, plant control systems, reactor protection systems, and electrical power distribution.
  • Define design philosophies, functional requirements, interface control documents, instrumentation strategies, and control room concepts.
  • Establish normal and emergency electrical power systems, including uninterruptible power supplies.
  • Lead IC&E technical engagement with the DOE and NRC and support I&C and electrical chapters of PSAR and SAR documentation.
  • Build and lead the IC&E engineering team, including staffing, mentoring, hiring, and competency development.
  • Manage IC&E scope, schedule, budget, vendors, subcontractors, and system integrators across design, licensing, procurement, construction support, and commissioning.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of engineering experience in instrumentation, control systems, and/or electrical design for complex, safety-critical industrial facilities.
  • Experience leading IC&E or I&C engineering teams on major capital projects.
  • Deep expertise in process control architectures, safety instrumented systems, and plant protection logic.
  • Familiarity with IEC 61511, IEC 61513, or equivalent functional safety standards.
  • Experience engaging regulators, certifying authorities, or third-party verification bodies.
  • Experience across the design, procurement, and construction phases of major projects.

Nice to have

  • Nuclear industry experience, especially I&C or electrical systems for reactor plants.
  • Knowledge of DOE or NRC licensing processes and IEEE nuclear I&C standards.
  • Experience with neutron instrumentation channels and first-of-a-kind reactor designs such as SMRs or HTGRs.
  • Professional Engineer license in instrumentation, control, or electrical engineering.
