Staff Engineer III - Distribution (Electric Utility Engineering)

Location: Hybrid, with the position located at the San Diego, California office. The listing header also references Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Salary: Minimum $110,000 annually; negotiable based on experience, skills, certifications, and location.

What you will do

• Lead the design and analysis of 4kV–35kV electric distribution systems, including line extensions, system upgrades, and reliability improvements.
• Develop construction work packages using PLS-CADD, GIS, AutoCAD, and client-specific design tools.
• Perform load calculations, voltage drop analysis, protective device coordination, load flow, and arc-flash studies.
• Prepare plans and profile drawings, bills of materials, construction specifications, and other engineering deliverables.
• Coordinate with utility clients, permitting agencies, and internal teams while supporting scope, schedule, and budget tracking.
• Mentor junior engineers and designers and provide technical guidance and quality assurance.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
• 8+ years of experience in electric distribution engineering, preferably with a utility or consulting firm.
• Engineer in Training certification; Professional Engineer license preferred.
• Proficiency with PLS-CADD or similar distribution modeling tools.
• Strong knowledge of GO-95, NESC, NEC, and utility design standards.
• Excellent communication and leadership skills, with availability to work nights and weekends when required by project schedules.

Nice to have

• Experience with Milsoft WindMil E&A software.
• Experience with O-Calc.
• Experience specifying portions of engineering systems based on prior work.
