TL;DR
RF Communications Engineer (Aerospace): Developing RF communications systems for spacecraft operating in Earth orbit, cislunar, and lunar regions with an accent on requirements development, link-budget analysis, RF testing, and regulatory compliance. Focus on designing and verifying full-lifecycle communications subsystems, analyzing system performance and reliability, and maintaining compatibility across spacecraft subsystems.

Location: Hybrid in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. Applicants must be a U.S. Person under ITAR and EAR regulations and must be eligible to obtain required export authorizations.

What you will do

  • Develop RF communications systems through design, simulation, testing, verification, and operations.
  • Define, document, and trace subsystem requirements across the full development lifecycle.
  • Perform link-budget analysis for spacecraft operating in Earth orbit, cislunar, and lunar regions.
  • Support Preliminary Design Reviews, Critical Design Reviews, and other system design reviews.
  • Test and analyze RF components and system performance, including risk and reliability assessment.
  • Coordinate with RF hardware suppliers, vendors, and other spacecraft subsystems to maintain system compatibility.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace or Electrical Engineering with an RF focus and 3 years of communications systems development experience, or a master’s degree with an RF focus and 1 year of relevant experience.
  • Experience operating RF laboratory equipment, including spectrum analyzers, vector network analyzers, and oscilloscopes.
  • Knowledge of transmission line theory, S-parameters, Fourier transforms, link budgets, digital and analog modulation, power spectral density, and noise analysis.
  • Knowledge of antenna theory, ancillary system design including thermal and mass properties, and basic printed circuit board design.
  • U.S. Person status and eligibility for required U.S. export authorizations are required.

Nice to have

  • Experience with Python or similar scripting languages such as MATLAB or Octave.
  • Experience with RF simulation tools such as HFSS.
  • Knowledge of range safety, ground safety compliance, and space environmental testing, including TVAC and EMI/EMC.
