Engineering Manager (Payments)

Location: Hybrid in San Francisco, with three days per week onsite

Salary: $222,000–$248,000 annual base compensation, plus equity and benefits

What you will do

• Lead a team of backend engineers building subscription and payments infrastructure and user-facing products.
• Own the technical roadmap for payment and subscription systems, balancing reliability, platform investment, and product delivery.
• Write code, create technical designs, and make architecture decisions alongside the engineering team.
• Own service reliability, on-call operations, incident response, and the operational quality of critical billing systems.
• Hire, coach, provide feedback to, and retain engineers at multiple career levels.
• Partner with product, engineering, design, accounting, and marketing to prioritize and deliver high-impact work.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional backend software development experience.
• 2+ years of engineering management experience, or equivalent technical leadership experience involving coaching, technical direction, and delivery ownership.
• Proficiency in at least one backend language: Ruby, Java, Scala, Python, or Go.
• Experience with distributed systems and production infrastructure such as MySQL, Redis, Kafka, or Kubernetes.
• Experience with or genuine interest in payments, billing, or subscription systems.
• Experience helping engineers grow through mentorship, direct feedback, and sponsorship.
