TL;DR
Lead Engineer (Data Center) (AI infrastructure): Designing, building, operating, and maintaining electrical infrastructure for AI training campuses with an accent on medium-voltage distribution, redundancy, and high-density compute power systems. Focus on proving fault contingencies, coordinating electrical loads for liquid-cooled GPU deployments, and leading design reviews, commissioning, and vendor acceptance testing.

Location: Memphis, Tennessee, United States. On-site only; this is not a remote or hybrid role. Travel up to 25% to other sites may be required.

Company

xAI develops AI systems designed to understand the universe and support humanity's pursuit of knowledge.

What you will do

  • Design, build, operate, and maintain electrical infrastructure for AI training campuses.
  • Own medium-voltage-to-GPU-rack electrical architecture, including topology, redundancy, standards, grounding, and arc-flash boundaries.
  • Prove split-feed and cross-feed redundancy schemes against bus, transformer, and switchgear failures.
  • Coordinate rack density, step-load behavior, power capping, and liquid-cooling electrical loads with compute, mechanical, and cooling engineering.
  • Lead design reviews with EPCs, OEMs, and owner's engineers; approve vendor drawings and factory acceptance test procedures.
  • Direct data center design, commissioning, R&D, BIM/Designer, and Protection & Controls engineers as the team grows.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, physics, or another engineering discipline.
  • 10+ years of electrical power design experience focused on high-power, high-voltage, or mission-critical systems.
  • Experience owning medium-voltage distribution architecture in the 10 kV to 35 kV range.
  • Knowledge of NFPA 70, NFPA 70B, NFPA 70E, NESC, and IEEE standards.
  • Willingness to work on-site in Memphis, Tennessee; this role requires extended hours, weekends, and 24/7 emergency on-call support.
  • Ability to work in heat, cold, rain, tight quarters, and at heights while wearing PPE; ability to lift up to 25 lbs. and hold a valid driver's license.

Nice to have

  • Professional Engineering license or active intent to pursue a PE license.
  • 5+ years of experience in mission-critical, hyperscale, or heavy industrial facilities.
  • Experience with high-density AI compute, liquid-cooled deployments, and repeatable designs across multiple halls or phases.
  • Experience with ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, PowerWorld, Matlab, PSCAD, PSEE, Simulink, or similar power systems analysis tools.
  • Experience building and leading an engineering team from the first hire.

Culture & Benefits

  • Small, hands-on team focused on engineering excellence and challenging technical work.
  • Flat organizational structure with leadership based on initiative and consistent delivery.
  • Direct collaboration across compute, mechanical, cooling, transmission and distribution, battery storage, EPC, OEM, and owner's engineering groups.
  • Work supporting construction, energization, operations, factory witness testing, and other data center sites.
