Engineering Manager (Backend)

Location: Remote across Germany; access to co-working spaces and headquarters in Cologne. In-person team meetings take place once per tertial. Workation is available for up to 60 days per year from locations within ±4 hours of the German time zone.

What you will do

• Lead several engineering teams, developing people, culture, and delivery performance.
• Translate strategy into measurable targets and course-correct when results fall short.
• Oversee delivery of customer-facing products and the backend systems behind them.
• Work closely with Product and maintain a high quality bar across the teams.
• Align architectural direction with delivery reality in collaboration with Staff Engineers.
• Establish transparent decision-making and resolve conflicts and misalignment.

Requirements

• Proven experience leading and developing engineers.
• Several years of software development experience, including hands-on technical management.
• Experience with web-based solutions, API design, and server-client interactions.
• Solid backend expertise and sufficient breadth across infrastructure, platforms, customer-facing web, and mobile systems.
• Strong communication, decisiveness, conflict-resolution skills, empathy, and a coaching approach.
• Fluent English required; German is a plus.
