Software Engineer II, Backend (Node.js)

Location: Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. The role follows hirify.global's hybrid working policy.

Salary: CAD 119,400–169,400 annual base pay.

What you will do

• Design, build, test, deploy, and operate backend services and APIs for mobile and web consumer applications.
• Contribute to architecture and technical decisions involving scalability, availability, consistency, latency, security, and cost.
• Design data models and work with relational and non-relational databases, caching, message queues, event streams, and asynchronous processing.
• Build and maintain GraphQL and REST APIs.
• Monitor and improve service performance, reliability, observability, and operational health.
• Collaborate with product managers, designers, and client engineers, and participate in code reviews.

Requirements

• 3+ years of professional experience building backend services or applications.
• BS/MS degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• Proficiency in server-side development, preferably Node.js with TypeScript.
• Experience with relational and non-relational databases, including data modelling, indexing, transactions, and performance optimization; PostgreSQL is preferred.
• Experience designing, building, or integrating GraphQL and REST APIs.
• Understanding of cloud infrastructure, containerized services, CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, and production systems on AWS or another major cloud platform.

Nice to have

• Experience with social, community, gaming, or other consumer products.
• Understanding of real-time communication, social graphs, recommendation systems, content discovery, personalization, trust and safety, or content moderation.
• Experience at an early-stage startup or on a zero-to-one product team.
