Senior Staff Customer Quality Engineer (Battery Manufacturing)

Location: Onsite in Alameda, California, United States; requires 30–40% international travel to contract manufacturer sites in Asia.

Salary: $156,000–$197,000 base pay annually, plus potential benefits, perks, equity, and bonuses.

What you will do

• Manage incoming, in-process, outgoing, and ongoing reliability quality activities across battery cell production lines.
• Drive quality readiness at contract manufacturers for EVT, DVT, PVT, and mass-production ramps, including inspection and hold/release protocols.
• Lead root-cause and corrective-action investigations for quality escapes and present closure plans to internal and contract-manufacturer leadership.
• Define quality-control, inspection, metrology, electrochemical-metric, and SPC systems across coating, calendering, winding or stacking, electrolyte filling, formation, aging, and final test.
• Develop PFMEAs, control plans, reaction plans, process documentation, OK-to-Ship records, lot dispositions, and factory quality reviews.
• Support DFM and tolerance analysis, execute cell and module reliability testing, and maintain compliance with applicable battery safety and certification standards.

Requirements

• At least 12 years of related experience with a bachelor’s degree, 8 years with a master’s degree, 5 years with a PhD, or equivalent experience.
• Hands-on experience with lithium-ion cell manufacturing and product qualification.
• Experience with battery-specific metrology, including coating weight, electrode thickness and density, porosity, tab alignment, and electrolyte fill weight.
• Strong command of DOE, RCCA/8D, SPC, GR&R/MSA, PFMEA, control plans, and Cpk/Ppk capability analysis.
• Knowledge of battery reliability methods, GD&T, tolerance stack-up analysis, manufacturing process documentation, and safety certification pathways including IEC, UL, GB/T, KC, and PSE.
• Experience managing contract-manufacturer or OEM quality relationships in Asia and presenting technical findings to engineering and executive audiences.
