TL;DR
Product Engineer (AI) (Frontend-leaning full-stack/generative media): Building fast, polished web applications and developer experiences for frontier image and video generation models with an accent on frontend architecture, high-volume media processing, and real-time inference. Focus on designing complex interactions for long-running generations and iterative editing, translating research capabilities into production products, and reviewing agent-generated code across the full stack.

Location: Freiburg, Germany; hybrid working with regular in-person attendance at the Freiburg or San Francisco office, or remote work with a monthly in-person week depending on the role

Base annual salary: €140,000–€190,000 plus equity

Company

Black Forest Labs is a frontier AI research lab developing generative image and video models, including Latent Diffusion, Stable Diffusion, and FLUX.

What you will do

  • Build and ship high-quality web applications end to end, including the Playground, Dashboard, launch demos, and reference implementations.
  • Turn new research capabilities into production products, from initial prototypes through launch.
  • Own frontend architecture, shared components, interaction quality, and engineering practices.
  • Design interfaces for long-running generations, iterative editing, large media payloads, and real-time inference.
  • Optimize performance for high-volume media processing and user-perceived latency.
  • Work with research, infrastructure, growth, and design to define product priorities.

Requirements

  • Track record of shipping real products used and relied upon by customers.
  • Experience working with coding agents in complex existing codebases and critically reviewing generated code for correctness, security, and maintainability.
  • Strong visual craft and ability to work from Figma or develop interfaces from scratch.
  • Strong product sense and ability to make and explain deliberate UX and technical trade-offs.
  • Excellent debugging skills across the frontend, API, database, and migration layers.
  • Comfort working with ambiguity and rapidly changing priorities in an early-stage research lab.

Nice to have

  • Experience with React, TypeScript, and Next.js.
  • Experience building developer tools or creative applications.
  • Experience building interfaces for generative models and knowledge of AI/ML concepts.
  • Experience with analytics, A/B testing, activation funnels, or open-source contributions.

Culture & Benefits

  • Work on interfaces for frontier image and video models, sometimes before public release.
  • Collaborate with researchers who developed major generative media technologies.
  • Competitive salary, equity, and benefits programs.
  • Hybrid work environment with regular global off-sites and covered reasonable travel costs.
  • Values include research excellence, open science, low ego, bold execution, and kindness.

Hiring process

  • Four conversations followed by a half-day onsite in Freiburg, with travel covered.
  • Live build session on the candidate’s own machine using normal tools; coding agents are encouraged.
  • The full interview process is shared upfront.
