Software Engineer - Application Platform (Ruby)

Location: Remote in the United States or from Figma's US hubs in San Francisco, CA and New York, NY

Annual base salary: $153,000–$376,000 USD

What you will do

• Design and evolve shared Ruby frameworks for REST APIs, asynchronous jobs, workflow orchestration, and data access.
• Improve the availability, reliability, scalability, and performance of backend systems supporting critical product functionality.
• Modernize the large Ruby codebase, including migrating REST APIs from Sinatra toward Rails and introducing stronger endpoint abstractions and type safety.
• Improve hot reloading, local development workflows, test infrastructure, CI reliability, debugging tools, and iteration speed.
• Strengthen scalability, isolation, observability, and recovery for the asynchronous job platform.
• Partner with product engineers and Infrastructure teams, establish engineering practices, review code, provide technical guidance, and mentor engineers.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 3+ years building production systems with Ruby.
• Experience building, maintaining, and evolving large Ruby applications and shared backend codebases used by multiple engineering teams.
• Experience designing reliable distributed systems at production scale, including APIs, background processing, testing, observability, and operations.
• Ability to improve established systems through architecture, modularization, migrations, performance work, reliability improvements, or developer tooling.
• Ability to create scalable abstractions, navigate technical tradeoffs, collaborate across teams, and mentor engineers.
• Must work from the United States; the role is available remotely or from a US hub.

Nice to have

• Experience with background-job or workflow systems, including retries, idempotency, scheduling, backpressure, isolation, and failure recovery.
• Experience with AWS services such as SQS and EKS, Temporal, Kubernetes, or Terraform.
• Experience improving test performance, local development environments, CI systems, or large-scale code migrations.
