Location: Oxford Road, Manchester, United Kingdom; based at the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

What you will do

  • Create nanoscale capillaries and devices by assembling atomically flat crystals.
  • Investigate molecular and ion transport through nanofluidic and proton-conducting devices.
  • Fabricate and characterise nanoscale devices using advanced micro- and nanofabrication techniques.
  • Maintain accurate, comprehensive, and secure research records while following health and safety procedures.
  • Train students and colleagues in project-related technical skills.
  • Prepare research papers and present findings at national and international conferences.

Requirements

  • PhD or near-completion of a PhD in materials science, condensed matter physics, or an equivalent field.
  • Experience fabricating nanoscale devices, preferably using atomically thin materials, and characterising them.
  • Experience with photolithography, electron-beam lithography, thin-film deposition, wet etching, and reactive ion etching.
  • Experience with SEM and AFM characterisation.
  • Strong publication record in internationally peer-reviewed journals and the ability to write scientific reports and research papers.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently with minimal supervision, supported by strong written and oral communication skills.

Nice to have

  • Previous postdoctoral experience.
  • Experience working in a cross-disciplinary research environment.
  • Experience developing fabrication technologies for low-dimensional materials such as graphene.
