Senior Software Engineer - NBA (Backend)

Location: Hybrid, approximately 3 days in-office, with current residence in or relocation to a commutable distance from one of these U.S. metropolitan areas: Washington, D.C.; Louisville, KY; Denver, CO; Dallas, TX; or Fort Lauderdale, FL. Occasional travel to hirify.global offices for training or meetings may be required.

Salary: $106,900–$147,000 per year, plus eligibility for a bonus incentive plan.

What you will do

• Design, implement, and operate explicit state machines for lifecycle transitions, validation, time-based changes, and event-driven changes.
• Architect transactional state stores as authoritative sources of truth and support safe high-concurrency operations.
• Build idempotent APIs and workflows that withstand retries, restarts, duplicate events, replay, and partial failures.
• Use the outbox pattern and messaging or streaming platforms to deliver reliable, atomic side effects and support replay, backfill, and recovery.
• Engineer distributed systems with concurrency controls, event ordering, causality, observability, auditability, structured logging, metrics, alerting, and tracing.
• Collaborate with platform, data, and quality engineering teams, participate in architecture reviews, and mentor engineers on reliable distributed systems.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field.
• 6+ years of backend or platform engineering experience.
• Hands-on expertise with state-machine modeling, transactional state stores, and idempotent API or workflow design.
• In-depth understanding of exactly-once or effectively-once processing and distributed-system failure modes.
• Proficiency in one or more contemporary languages, including Java, Kotlin, Go, or Python.
• Experience with AI-assisted development tools for productivity and code quality.

Nice to have

• Experience with outbox, transactional messaging, or event-sourcing patterns.
• Familiarity with low-latency, high-throughput architectures.
• Operational experience with systems requiring strict auditability and correctness.
• Experience in regulated or mission-critical domains.
