Staff Embedded Firmware Engineer (IoT)

Location: Richmond, BC, Canada

Salary: CAD 140,000–170,000/year for Canadian candidates; US candidates: $180,000–200,000/year, plus performance bonus and equity.

What you will do

• Lead the architecture, design, development, and delivery of embedded firmware for IoT and video streaming products.
• Design, debug, and integrate device drivers, communication protocols, RTOS components, and platform firmware.
• Integrate SoCs, chipsets, image sensors, wireless modules, and other hardware components into product platforms.
• Analyze schematics and datasheets, troubleshoot system-level issues, and optimize performance, memory usage, power consumption, and boot time.
• Collaborate with Hardware, Cloud, Mobile, QA, and external ODM teams on end-to-end system integration.
• Provide technical leadership through design and code reviews, mentoring, and firmware hiring.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.
• 10+ years of embedded firmware development experience, including video streaming and network-connected devices.
• Expert-level Embedded C and C++ programming skills.
• Strong experience with RTOS, Embedded Linux, multithreaded software, device drivers, and real-time multimedia systems.
• Knowledge of H.264/H.265, video and audio processing, compression, and streaming technologies.
• Experience with TCP, UDP, HTTP/HTTPS, RTP, RTSP, SIP, WebRTC, Wi-Fi, BLE, LTE, Git, and hardware debugging tools.

Nice to have

• Consumer IoT or smart home firmware development experience.
• Experience with Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread, or Matter.
• Knowledge of Linux memory management, file systems, memory protection, kernel internals, or U-Boot.
• Proficiency with Python, Perl, or Lua.
